Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic practice that utilizes hypnotic trance to induce a deep state of relaxation to influence the unconscious mind to help you generate new behavior(s) and overcome specific challenges.

Anyone can benefit from hypnotherapy. It is a fast, effective, and pain free way to incite behavioral change by engaging the mind with the body.

There are a multitude of benefits to be gained. Common reasons to seek out hypnotherapy include:

  • Reducing stress or anxiety

  • Managing panic attacks

  • Managing chronic pain

  • Removing unwanted behaviors, such as smoking or overeating

  • Weight loss

  • Eliminating fears and phobias

  • Being more confident

  • Improving performance

  • Improving sleep

Hypnotherapy Basics

  • Hypnotic trance is simply the fixation of your attention to the exclusion of all other things, and it is a natural state of mind for all humans. We naturally move through different trance states all day every day. For example, when you’re engrossed in a TV show or movie you aren’t thinking about what you had for dinner or who just walked into the room. Likewise, your state of mind when you first wake up is different than when you’re having a conversation with someone or driving a car.

    The difference with hypnotherapy is that instead of naturally moving through these different states of awareness throughout the day, we are now deliberately inducing a trance state to access the unconscious mind.

    The conscious mind is the part of the mind that is aware of the present moment, including our thoughts, feelings, and sensations. The unconscious mind is the part of the mind that is outside of conscious awareness. It is a reservoir of thoughts, feelings, memories, and impulses that we are not aware of but that can still influence our behavior.

  • Each hypnotherapy session will be a little different depending on your individual needs, goals, progress, preferred techniques, etc., but each session will typically last for an hour. (We can schedule longer sessions if necessary). 

    We will begin each session by discussing what you want to accomplish or change in your life. This discussion can take upwards of ten minutes or more because it is very important to have clear direction and executable goals. 

    Depending on your goal(s), there are a number of hypnotherapy techniques that may be used to induce deep relaxation and to tap into the unconscious mind (think guided meditation with creative visualization). These techniques can be practiced sitting up or laying down, whichever is the most comfortable to you. Practicing these techniques will take the better part of the session to yield the best results. The end of the session will be reserved for discussion of integration and next steps.

    Hypnotherapy is different for everyone, you may see significant improvements after just one session, but most people will need multiple sessions to achieve their goals.

  • I offer in-person sessions in Sugarhouse, as well as virtual sessions via Zoom. Virtual sessions will require you to be in a quiet place with minimal distractions with a good internet connection where you will be comfortable being on video.

  • Our brains naturally oscillate between different types of brain waves, also called altered states of awareness. We know this because we can measure brain waves with an electroencephalography (EEG), which measures oscillating electrical voltages in the brain over time.

    Hypnotherapy induces deep relaxation to move your brain from Beta, which is an active, logical state, into Alpha or Theta, which are relaxed, meditative states.
